Samsung and Nokia are teaming up again, but this time it\u2019s not about 5G or a mobile deal. Instead, Samsung wants to use Nokia\u2019s proprietary video technology for TVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a new report, Nokia and Samsung signed a multi-year patent licensing deal yesterday that will see Samsung pay royalties to use Nokia\u2019s video technology for TVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s unclear exactly what kind of Nokia-developed video technology Samsung wants to license, but it could be codecs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, Nokia published a paper detailing how codecs would change over the next five years and how video would be used and consumed in more diverse ways, likely thanks to AI. Video would be displayed on a variety of devices, from holograms to augmented reality displays and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, Nokia said that video codecs must be \u201ccapable of handling such diverse needs efficiently and with quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not entirely clear whether the licensing deal between Samsung and Nokia involves video codecs, but it\u2019s no surprise that Samsung is looking to bring more advanced AI-based technology to its TVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At CES 2025, Samsung announced its new NQ4 AI Processor 3rd Generation for TVs and Vision AI technology to take TV search to the next level. With a simple press of a button on the remote, Vision AI will learn about objects and people on screen to provide relevant web search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
