The number of users in South Korea of Samsung’s Internet of Things (IoT) platform SmartThings has officially surpassed 20 million, marking a major step forward in the development of the company’s connected device ecosystem.
Samsung said this impressive growth comes from increased demand for home appliances integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) and continuous improvement of AI features in the SmartThings platform. AI home appliances sold this year show an increasing rate of connection to SmartThings. Specifically, 92% of users of the Bespoke AI Steam robot vacuum cleaner and 80% of users of the Bespoke AI Combo washer-dryer have activated the SmartThings connection feature.
SmartThings users mainly use features such as:
- Home Care, which allows remote diagnosis and management of devices.
- Energy saving, which supports monitoring and optimizing power consumption.
- Pet Care, which provides the ability to track the location and status of pets as well as control related home appliances.
Notable innovations in SmartThings include: live technical support service from the app when detecting problems, a membership point redemption program based on energy savings, and a pet health monitoring chart. The usage rate of these features has grown impressively, reaching 72%, 71%, and 79% respectively from the beginning of the year to December.
The SmartThings ecosystem continues to expand, thanks to its outstanding integration capabilities with more than 1,000 domestic users connecting and using more than 100 different devices. Of these, more than 300 products are from external partners, in addition to devices manufactured by Samsung.
A notable trend is that users set up “Automation” functions, which help devices operate according to daily routines. For example, lights will automatically turn on and air purifiers will start working when users come home, making SmartThings a powerful assistant in improving convenience in life.
A representative of Samsung Electronics commented: “As the demand for AI home appliances increases, the number of SmartThings users is also expanding and the ways of using it are becoming more diverse. We are committed to continuing to develop more new features to bring more convenience to users’ lives.”
